Great boating but a chilly wind

This was going to be quite a long post, but we've been nattering to Stephen Pigott half the afternoon, and we're going out for a meal with them quite shortly, so I'll save my thoughts about a) the engine start problem yesterday, and b) the stoppage at Woodend Lock until tomorrow. That post will probably be done in the morning as we're taking Sally onto Cannock Chase tomorrow afternoon.

Today the engine started just fine; we managed to get away at eight, after I'd popped into the village to get a paper (surprise!). Sheila steered at first whilst I got a batch of EasiYo yoghurt started, than I took over so that she could shelter from the chill and nurse her cold. At first it was idyllic, bright and cold with a flat calm, but as the morning went on, the wind came up, a lazy wind that couldn't be bothered to go round you. Nevertheless, it was just splendid to be underway, and we got to Branston Lock in a bit over two hours.

The wind was quite vicious by then, and in fact gave me trouble as we came out. Branston is one of those locks that's a bit windy at the best of times, and as Sanity Again emerged, her prop filled up with muck, she slowed down and the bow blew across onto the lock landing.

We were soon away, though, and had no trouble finding a mooring on the VM this side of the bridge. There are only another two boats here even now.

We crossed with Wyrd at the lock; they'd been held up by the unscheduled stoppage at Woodend, and were the first boat through, so now we know that that stoppage has been lifted.

On to Alrewas tomorrow; as I say, I'll do a longer post then.
