We had an excellent session with Trevor and Rachael last night, showing them over the boat and then enjoying a couple of drinks together. We must have been getting on well, by the time anyone checked the hour it was nearly midnight.
So we had a lazy start this morning, but then put in a bit of serious work; I used the battery top up system for the first time. I'm pleased to say that it's as straightforward as we'd hoped; the batteries didn't take very much water, as you'd expect for a brand new bank, and it's clear that a monthly fill will be no problem.
Sheila turned out the space under the forward end of the side berth, identified some stuff that could go out and thereby made room for the pressure bottle bit of the top up system.
Meanwhile, I did all the under-the-engine-boards jobs; checking the oil and water levels in the engine, replacing those disposable nappies in the bilge that had absorbed condensation, and pumping out the plastic box that sits under the stern gland to catch the drips.
After coffee, we took a stroll over to Midland Chandlers, where I chose a new tiller pin to replace the one that's now at the bottom of Braidbar's dock. Rather than another thistle, I've gone for a pair of owls this time; I'll take a picture of it when it's in use.
We had planned to do a bit of washing and polishing of the boat today, but in a demonstration of the power of thought, it started raining every time the idea came into our heads...

We're planning a quiet evening and early night. Tomorrow, we've an Ocado delivery booked, but not a lot else on.

It’s actually a nice and useful piece of post. I am glad that you simply shared with us. Thanks!
Hi Bruce
Any chance you could post a photo of the battery watering system along with the supplier details. Sounds interesting.
Regards
Tom
Keira: you're very welcome, glad you are enjoying it!
Tom: a pic wouldn't be a lot of help, as the doings is mostly tucked away under the electrics cupboard, hence the need for the top up system (though having used it, I'd go for one anyway now).
I'll post some useful links in today's effort, but in the meantime you could google Pb Batteries and follow the links to narrowboat batteries, and the Powercell site has a page about the top up system.
Main thing is you need the right tops on the battery cells to install the float units, but looking at your photo of the ones you've got, I'd expect Powercell to be able to oblige.
Cheers
Bruce
