Sheila didn't sleep terribly well last night and was awake early, so decided to set off at six in the calm cool peace. I got to loaf in bed for a while longer, but finally dragged myself out and made a cup of tea for us both. By the time I'd washed, dressed and breakfasted we were passing Les Wilson's yard.
Sheila just had nice time to get her own breakfast before we arrived at the Rose Narrowboats base at Stretton Stop. They've never been the tidiest of yards, but somehow they were looking particularly scruffy today.
After I'd worked the little swing bridge, we chugged merrily on, Sheila steering and your correspondent lurking down below (it was still quite cool and misty/murky) dealing with email and stuff (ie browsing Canal World Forum for scandal, mostly).
Gradually the sun broke through, until we reached Newbold, where we were able to find a mooring by hovering meaningfully until a chap who was just thinking of leaving took off and we could snaffle his space.
We popped down to the Co-op for some fresh supplies, including more mayo. We had got a jar in the fridge, but it had turned a bit stale, probably as a result of having been opened to make duck egg sarnies about two months ago.
On we went, merrily, merrily. Brownsover actually had some space, but now we didn't need to stop, so we came on to the foot of Hillmorton by just on eleven. Loads of room here, too. As usual, we've stopped on the first bit of piling you come to, at the start of the marked moorings. It's quieter here than round the corner.
Having had an early breakfast, we were ready for an early lunch. Afterwards, we walked up the flight in blazing sun and had a quick chat to the lockie. The flight is only open on one side, and indeed they are working on the top lock bull nose. We'll go up quite early tomorrow, aiming to get to Braunston by about half ten, when the overnight moorers should be moving off.
We've decided to press on to Crick the next day, and then lurk there until the show. We had thought of ambling up and down the Leicester Section, but if this hot weather holds, just doing a bit of boat cleaning and tidying then loafing in the sun seems preferable.
