Relaxing in the sun

First off, a grovelling apology to Catherine Mason; she’s training as a paediatric nurse, not a nursery nurse as I said yesterday. There’s a good deal of difference, and I should have known (and have probably been told) better. Sorry, Catherine!

Having decided to stay put today, we were able to have a very relaxed start. After doing a bit of shopping, we checked out the local geocaches and loaded a couple into the Garmin. What we wanted was an excuse to explore Rode Heath Rise, the wildlife area that’s been developed on the site of a salt works.

This worked really well; we found one cache in some woodland we wouldn’t otherwise have visited, but failed with the other, partly because we didn’t have gloves or long sleeves on and so couldn’t rummage in the undergrowth in the right place. No matter, on the way back we saw a good range of the butterflies which have colonised the meadow. I managed to take photos of three of them with the phone:

Comma with ragged wings

Slightly fuzzy Meadow Brown

Tiny Small Copper, just 25mm wingspan

Back at the boat we did some dedicated loafing. Rock ‘n Roll went by but couldn’t stop as they were on a mission to get through the tunnel today; hope you made it, guys!

A number of other boats have passed through and exchanged the time of day which was very nice.

We had planned to run a washload whilst recharging the batteries, but there was enough sun on the solar panel to do the latter, even after running the Hurricane to get some hot water. We’ll have to squeeze a washload in tomorrow, though it’s a short run from here to Church Lawton. Sheila’s getting a bit worried about the backlog.
