A trip to Derby, and a sale

Things warmed up overnight, and the walking conditions were quite tricky first thing, with a layer of wet over the packed snow, except where the paths had been salted. We bundled ourselves up and went and waited for the bus into Derby, slightly anxiously after we'd been told by a fellow passenger that the 9.20 had never turned up.

The 10.20 did, though, albeit a few minutes late, which was not bad considering the generally foggy and moist state of affairs. Once in Derby, we visited the bank, and popped into Wilkinson for some bits and pieces. After that, it was into the haven of the Westfield Centre. Lakeland and Boots were first on the list, and then some clothes shopping in Marks.

It was now lunchtime, so we indulged in pie and chips at Harvey's in the food court. We just had time afterwards to buy a few groceries in Sainsbury's before catching the one o'clock back.

Later in the afternoon, Alison, a fellow moorer, rang to enquire about our Poang chairs. She came over, we put one together for her and she bought them. She's going to collect them in a few days time, after she's sorted out where to put them.

So, all in all, a productive day; we've got the dehumidifier running in the engine room at the moment, but it hasn't produced anything yet; maybe the air is a bit too dry in there at the moment? Or perhaps, since it's a sort of fridge, it needs a while to get going.

Hi Bruce, seems a while since we were leap frogging along the Shroppie. I was just reading your entries re the dehumidifier with some concern.
Most boats get condensation in the engine room on a trad stern, usually dripping from the hatch (difficult to get any depth of insulation on them). It's common in the swim / bilge area too but not so much to actually start collecting in the bottom of the bilge. As for running down the walls, that would suggest there is no insulation behind the linings. Difficult to tell from your Flickr photos of the build but the insulation overall looks shy of the 25mm it should be. I'm hoping its the camera telling lies. Regards Roger

Hi Roger, good to hear from you.

We're satisfied with the insulation in general, and condensation on most of the walls only happened in the very depths of last winter, and then only a dampness, not running. Peter Mason agrees with us that we're getting too much damp in the engine room, though, and when we're up there in September, he plans to pull all the linings out from the problem areas and check the depths of the foam.

We had some leakage from a couple of cooling system joints, which led to pools of water in the bilge, probably explaining why we got so much damp in that compartment. Having got on top of it (fingers crossed) it's been much better the past couple of weeks.

The dehumidifier isn't in fact picking up a lot so far, but we'll use it to get levels down, and then mainly when Sheila's drying clothes indoors.

Regards to you both

Bruce

Ref the dehumidifier this will not work if the temprature! is not above 5 degrees C and it is also prone to icing up if it is v. cold. Carol nb Sunrise Hilgey Norfolk
