A Busy Sunday

But very rewarding. Truly the route to happiness is through helping others. After yet another cooked breakfast in the Willow Tree we assembled in the marina office at ten and after just a bit of faffing about, set off to the wildlife field south of the road. There a gang of us planted four lines of saplings, trying not to make them too regimented, but taking care that there would still be room for the mower to go between them.

Maybe that should have been the root to happiness…

OK, maybe not – please yourselves. (© F Howerd)

They were a mixed collection of native trees, including rowan, silver birch, wild cherry, hazel, dogwood  and quickthorn. Each has a bamboo cane and a plastic spiral tube protecting it. We then removed to the other side of the entrance cut and put in another couple of rows in similar style. A group of wild cherry in the angle between the road embankment and the entrance tunnel was christened the Chekov Copse by the more erudite members of the party.

After a restorative hot choc (Sheila) and decaff coffee (yours truly), kindly bought for us by Wyn James (he's a very nice man, a very nice man indeed), we staggered back to the boat for a quiet sit down followed by soup and a sandwich for lunch.

Helen from Alice came round at half two and we had a merry afternoon helping her set up her newly acquired Kindle and loading some of our collection of freebie books onto it. That was inevitably followed by a mug of tea and a good goss.

I've now just got to get a shower and cook dinner; that'll be easy peasy, we're having the rest of the pot roast with bubble and squeak and the pot roast gravy.

Tomorrow, an extra Sally sit as Elanor has a job interview in Swadlincote. Fingers crossed for that...
