Retail therapy day

It's not all we've done, but we did make a serious expedition to Sainsbury's this morning, buying mainly fresh food as I've booked an Ocado delivery for Friday at Newbold. We also got some herbs to plant in the final trough: Greek basil, thyme and flat leaf parsley. The mint has survived the winter (it's almost impossible to kill mint) so I'll have four fresh herbs to choose from this summer. The new ones will need some hardening off before they can be planted out, mind.

The parsley is a bit of an experiment; in previous years we've tried growing coriander but although fresh coriander leaf is excellent and can't really be substituted for, the plant always ends up shooting and seeding before I've used a decent amount of it.

Back at the boat I started the engine and once it had heated the water and got through the bulk charge phase with the batteries, Sheila put on a wash load.

This afternoon was mainly windy, our excuse for sitting tight today, and the showers have held off for long enough for us to rinse the port cabin side. This is the one that's been properly washed and polished already this year so it duly came up bright and shiny again.

The process of shuffling along on the kneeler pad to sponge off the top bend below the gunwale reminded me that I've been meaning to get a pair of those strap-on knee pads for ages, so I popped along to B&Q here and did just that. A basic pair cost less than £7; not a major expenditure for something that should make working on the gunwales a lot more comfortable.

Tomorrow we'll make a fairly early start so as to get to Peel's Wharf in Fazeley in good time to fill the water tank before nipping down to Fazeley Mill marina for a pump out. Then it will be on to Alvecote where we plan to eat out at the Samuel Barlow tomorrow night.

You should be OK, the Sam Barlow opens at 4pm nn a Tuesday having been shut from after Sunday evening.
I think it is Tuesdays and Wednesdays that it is 2 courses for less than £10.

Check with Fazeley Mill to see if they are open. I know they say that they are shut on a Wednesday but three weeks ago on a Tuesday I carefully reversed onto the fuel pump and tied the boat up. No one appeared and when I went to the office there was a note on the door saying they were closed.

Thanks Ann, goody, goody!

Steve: thanks for the warning, but all was well, with Jackie in top form. It must have been a one off closure that caught you out.

All the best
