Hair today, gone on Monday

You can tell we’re been here too long; today’s big excitement was Sheila trimming my hair and beard. I postponed having my morning shower until after breakfast, scoffed the porridge and then got her to wield the clippers.

By cunningly choosing to do this on a Monday, bed change day, I was then able to put my jim-jams out for the wash with all the stray bits of hair sticking to them.

As always, the secret of boating happiness is forward planning…

/wahaha

(Thinking about it, that phrase forward planning is a pleonasm or tautology, isn’t it? What would backward planning involve?)

We’ve had a walk down to the village and another round the marina, though the second had to be quite brisk as the wind got up after lunch and it’s now very cold out there, not to say parky.

Something I forgot to mention yesterday was attaching a black plastic sack over the stern fender. Last year, a couple of boaters found themselves unable to move their boats because coots had built nests on the stern fender and rudder. Once they’ve started breeding, it’s an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act to disturb them, so you just have to wait until the chicks have fledged and gone off before you can shift the nest or the boat.

A rustly, shiny bin bag looks very unattractive to coots as a base for a nest and though it will be a while before they start nest building, Spring is on its way and it’s no use waiting until they do.

Sally’s coming tomorrow, so stand by for a blog from her.

I like the black plastic coot deterrent idea! Can I nick it, duly accredited, for the Newsletter? Thanks!

Be my guest, Jo, though I can't claim credit for the idea. We were told it by a Streethay moorer; can't remember who now.

All the best

Backward planning is clearly making the plan fit what actually happened by drawing it up after the event. See National Waterway Festival (or indeed ANY waterway festival) site plan as an example.... :-)
