More June than March

It's been another roasting hot day. We've mostly been watching the guys start on the jobs we're having done on Sanity Again this time. First up was some condensation staining we'd got in the engine room. With spending the winters on a mooring, we don't run the engine very much, and so there's much less fresh air drawn through the space below the engine boards. In addition, unlike a Webasto or similar heater, the Hurricane draws its air supply from outside the boat.

This led to an accumulation of water in the bilges, and condensation forming above the boards, with consequential staining of the oak faced ply. Two things were needed, increasing the ventilation to the area below, and repairing the damage, by replacing or covering the stained areas. They also checked that the full depth of insulation was present behind the linings.

It's all gone very well, and we've just got some more varnishing to be done to finish off. Next winter, I'll take more care to keep the damp under control down below, including using the dehumidifier when Sheila's drying stuff in the engine room.

We had a minor disaster, in that we'd removed the box step from just inside the back doors, and stood it on the concrete edge of the wharf. Graham Johnson, coming to see us to get some oxalic acid crystals, didn't see it there, and pushed it into the water with the front bumper of his motor.

Some time was spent fishing out the stuff that had been in the box, as well as the box itself, and trying to reassure Graham and stop him from apologising. We didn't manage to recover my tiller pin, but that was the only casualty, and Graham very generously insisted on paying for it; since it was at least partly my fault for leaving the box in a vulnerable position, this was really kind of him.

Tomorrow, we have some more boat shuffling to do, and the final steps to fit the auto top up system to Sanity Again's battery bank should happen.
