Goodbye 2013

It's been an eventful year for us and a pretty good one. As boaters we're always aware of the weather, of course, and this year has been no exception. A long and very cold winter led to a late, rather disappointing spring but then a glorious summer.

You can't, of course, tie any particular weather event to the climate change debate, but what we've seen so far is certainly not inconsistent with what's been predicted as a consequence of rising average temperatures. I'm well aware, however, that in this as in many other big scientific issues, we just don't live long enough to form opinions based on personal experience.

Indeed, the whole history of modern man is only an eye blink on geological and meteorological time scales. We all tend to assume that the conditions we knew in our childhood are the norm. Given the difficulty of accurate recall of that time and the limited sample it represents, it's no wonder that debates about changes in weather or landscape or the prevalence of wildlife are more often characterised by heat rather than light.

Ho hum, that's all very serious for the last day of the year; we're not doing anything special tonight, though Elanor and Sally are coming over; where Elanor lives near the Pirelli stadium will be much noisier than here, so we're going to have them sleep over with us.

I might see if Sally wants to blog tomorrow, though after the productions of the hounds over on the Indigo Dreaming blog I'm not sure that we can compete for sheer loopiness. It's strange really, it's the psychologists who have a professional rep for weirdness, not the pharmacists…

It's a coping mechanism Bruce!

I loved Sally's photos in the previous post - I can see the whole tree-grabbing game being a big hit - hope we meet you out and about in 2014 so that she can teach Archie :-)

Here's to much happiness and maybe a little less loopiness in 2014 (are you listening hounds??).
