A day in Stone

It occurs to me that you couldn't keep a boat called Lochinvar here. After all, according to Sir Walter:

"He staid not for brake and he stopp'd not for Stone"

Sorry, it's been a bit quiet, though a good day. We had a nice lie-in, a leisurely breakfast and then, after nine o'clock in deference to Elanor's animadversions, we went shopping. (Elanor frequently complains about all these oldies who go shopping in the rush hour or on a Saturday, when honest working types are desperately trying to get their shopping done with a load of other stuff to do as well.) We got pretty well everything we were looking for, though found to our sorrow that the hardware store, Bailey's, has closed. It was one of the last of the real old hardware stores with that classic smell and we shall miss it.

We just got back to the boat before the rain came on again with a vengeance. I ran the engine over lunchtime to top the batteries up and to give us a tank of hot water. This meant that a washing up could be done before I turned it off, so there should be more than enough for a shower shortly and to do the washing up after dinner.

We've spent the afternoon watching Patience as planned, another Opera Australia masterpiece with some of our favourite singers, such as Anthony Warlow playing Archibald Grosvenor. It's not one of the great G&S operettas, but still very entertaining.

Tomorrow, we'll head off again, aiming to get south of Weston probably.

That's bad news about Bailey's, it was a very useful source of both supplies and nostalgia.

There is a cupboard full of items which I bought there knowing that they would come in useful one day.

Frank.

Sad about Bailey's. There is still a smaller Ironmongers (Mountfords) up Lichfield Street, near the Church. Peter & Gill
